The Ancient Chongxu Taoist Temple is
situated on the Luofu Mountain in Boluo County of South China's Guangdong
Province. It has been designated as a key Taoist temple under national
protection by the State Council. Luofu Mountain, the Taoist Holy Land in South
China and the seventh fascinating place of Taoism, stands at the shore of
Dongjiang River in Guangdong Province. The famous Taoist Ge Hong once came here
to cultivate himself and propagate the Taoism in the 4
th century.
Some Taoist temples were then built and the Luofu Mountain gradually became the
Taoist Holy Land in
Lingnan area (mainly referring to Guangdong Province
and Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region). Subsequently, the imperial court of every
dynasty paid great attention to the position of the Luofu Mountain and often
gave support to it, thus it became one of the centers of the Quanzhen Sect. In
addition, Luofu Mountain is a famous tourist resort with beautiful scenery. The
Ancient Chongxu Taoist Temple, located at the northern side of Luofu Mountain,
is the well-preserved temple among the temples on the mountain. It is a complex
of courtyard including the Temple Gate and Main Hall, etc., with a construction
area of 4,400 square meters. In the temple, there are many valuable artworks and
relics related to old myths and legends. Some statues of immortals (such as Ge
Hong, Lü Dongbin) are enshrined inside.
In modern times, the
Ancient Chongxu Taoist Temple has been handed over from the government to the
Taoist organizations for utilizing, managing, carrying out normal religious
activities and serving the society. Disciples from Hong Kong, Taiwan and other
regions will come here for worship on the important
festivals.
