Diego de Pantoja (Pang Diwo)

  Diego de Pantoja (1571-1618), a Spanish, joined the Society of Jesus in 1589 at the age of 18. He arrived in Macao in 1599 in Beijing two years later.

  

  In 1611, he began to revise calendar for the government of the Ming Dynasty (1368-1644). Later, he drew five maps of the continents in the world, making a brief introduction to the history, geography, political situations and products of each country.

  

  In 1614, he published a book entitled Qi Ke, which mainly discussed the ethic culture of Catholicism, having some influence on the then China. In 1618, he died in Macao.
