Founded during Yongle reign of the Ming Dynasty (1386-1644), Yong'antang Drugstore has a history of more than 580 years, 200 years earlier than that of Tongrentang. In ancient times, when talking about medicine, Beijingers always thought of Nei Yong'an (Yong'antang in a corner of Dongsipailou) and Wai Tongren (Tongrentang outside of Qian Men).

Yong'antang experienced many changes of ownership in the past. It used to be Dong's Ironware Store of Dongsipailou during the early Qing Dynasty (1644-1840). With several generations' hard work, it reached its peak in the 1930s and developed into a large-scale drug store with sixteen departments and about 1,100 kinds of traditional Chinese medicines.

Since its establishment, Yong'antang has kept to the tenet of suiting the remedy to the case and making profits in proper ways. It is good at pharmacy, diagnosing based on pathological research. All raw materials were collected from different provinces and made into bolus, powder, ointment and pills according to ancient secret prescriptions. Its fine syrup medicines are made from first-class ginseng and deer antlers. Besides, it had its own gardens to grow various herbal medicines.

Yong'antang owed its high reputation to precise prescription, excellent raw materials, and good services. After liberation, it developed into a specialized drugstore engaged in medicine distribution.
