
There are 17 public libraries in Chengdu, with a total book collection of 2.81 million volumes; it also enjoys 15 cultural centers, five public art centers, 10 museums and 24 administrations for cultural relics protection. There are 11 municipal art troupes in the city, which present more than 1,000 shows each year.
Modern media plays an important role in the Chengdu citizens' cultural activities.
A television broadcasting network with multi-transmitting means such as microwave, cable and satellite has been made available in the city. The city owns two broadcasting towers, making 17 programs; and two TV towers with 26 TV channels. The CATV network covers all the towns and villages, and the city cable television network reaches 7,000 Fiber-km.
Chengdu is not only a historical and cultural city, but also the most
important education center in southwest China. The city now has 66 institutions
of higher learning and technical secondary schools, with a total number of
registered students of 396,500. There are 57 colleges for higher education, with
a total number of registered students of 130,900; as well as 2,671 secondary and
primary schools, with a total number of registered students of
1,578,200.
