The first session of the Special Conference of UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage Conservation Intergovernmental Committee was held on in Chengdu Wednesday, discussing the implication of the Convention for the Safeguarding of the Intangible Cultural Heritage.

More than 200 delegates from 24 member states, including China, more than 30 state parties of the UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage Conservation Intergovernmental Committee and five non-governmental organizations attended the five-day conference. Issues they discussed included works needing urgent protection, the selection criteria, regulating organizations and authorization procedures.

This is the first time UNESCO has held a conference in China to discuss details of an international convention.

In October 2003, UNESCO passed the Convention for the Safeguarding of the Intangible Cultural Heritage in its 32nd General Assembly to promote the diversity of world culture.

China actively participated in the negotiation for that convention and became the sixth country to accept it, making a great contribution to the convention's establishment and entry into force.
