The architecture section of the Venice Biennale was established in 1980, although a few exhibitions had taken place since 1975 within the art section. The 10th International Architecture Exhibition, directed by Richard Burdett and dedicated to cities, architecture and society, took place from September 10 to November 19, 2006.
Last year's exhibition was great success among the public. The Biennale venues in Venice and Palermo have totaled 130,226 visits.
From the September 10 to the November 10, 127,298 people visited the
international exhibitions in Venice, at the Padiglione Italia and at the
Arsenale, including cities, architecture and society and cities of Stone -
organized within the project Sensi Contemporanei with the participation of the
Apulia Region - as well as The New City.
Almost 3,000 people have visited
the four city-port displays, organized within the Sensi Contemporanei project
with the participation of the Sicily Region, which have been set up in three
different venues in Palermo and were open until the January 14.
Furthermore, 91,000 people have visited the exhibitions of 12 different
countries set up in the historical centre of Venice and 104,000 people
respectively have visited the 11 collateral events.
